FW: Manassas Battlefield

This is the story of the last casualty of the 2nd Battle of Manassas, VA in 1862. At the "unfinished railroad" area where Jackson's Confederate troops had repulsed Federal advances, I had to go on a recon mission while Chris read the account of the previous clash of the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac. After moving down the ditch where  the original clash took place, I was attacked by at least 200 Union deer ticks and quickly retreated  back to my wife's position at the entrance to the trench.  At this time she went damn near hysterical, screaming that I had deer ticks all over my feet! I thought they were ants and was calmly brushing them off. After much commotion, shoes and socks were removed and left at the battlefield, and we retreated back to Hagerstown, MD for a full tick check which revealed two Union "skirmishers" in a delicate area. They were captured with a tweezers and executed on site.
Cocktails were definitely in order at this point, so we ventured out across town through the "low rent" district of Hagerstown.  At this time we observed three Hagerstown police officers about to engage in a tactical "event" complete with sawed-off shotguns drawn!  Perhaps there were more Yankee ticks holed-up there!  We didn't stick around to find out!
Chris is planning our next road trip!  (Actually it was a great trip, one I've waited almost fifty years to take!)

Grandpa's garden

Grandpa's garden is coming along nicely. Mike B, Kaleb, Me, Mike, and Amy did some weeding today. MikeM was roto-tilling with the beast when I left. Kind of made me nervous since it was like a 100 degrees and he was by himself.

Weekend fishing

It was a glorious weekend/week up north (as well as throughout Wisconsin.)
Michael and I went fishing TWICE in four days!  Now that we have a new trolling motor (so cool), fishing is a breeze.  Catching is another thing altogether. "That's why they call it fishing, not catching." (michael myers). Nonetheless, we had a lot of action.  On the first afternoon, we caught a few 15 inch + bass, a few crappies, and several northern.
Last night, we went out after dinner and fished until sunset  9:00 p.m.  Bass were jumping for bugs all around us, but we couldn't coax them to attack our lures.  Wished we had a fly fishing rod along.  For some reason, the northern were attracted to my bait -- I caught three of them, one of notable size.  There are several advantages to being a girl, and one of them is having the option to not remove a northern from my lure!  Michael gets to play the he-man and grab the "snake" with his bare hands and deftly take over the hook removal.

Another interesting wildlife sighting this morning -- three snapping turtles laying their eggs in the sand along the roadside in Natural Lakes just across from Curt's cabin.  I would've taken a picture, but didn't want to disturb mama turtle in here struggle to propagate.

dogs part 2

...and a few more.

gone to the dogs...

Here are some dogs that were at the cabin this weekend.

Sunday Night at the Farm

Last night, we had dinner with Mom and Dad. It was alot of fun. I was able to find alot of the plants that had been planted so weeded around those and continued some roto-tilling where MJ left off. That thing really beats your body up a little. We also planted the dill. I am going to have the boys go over there and hoe between the corn plants. Mom ate "OK."
